DIY Ribbon Wands

Standard

I made these easy to make wands to use while teaching music in the nursery class at church. They are fun to wave and watch flutter through the air which entices kids (and adults) to move to music. Make a few, put on some fun music, and DANCE!

You will need:

  • Duct Tape (I used shiny silver but the more colorful the better!)
  • scissors
  • narrow fabric ribbon cut to 1 yard lengths
  • large craft sticks (tongue depresser size)

1.  Using the scissors, cut about a 1/2 inch of the duct tape.  This can be tricky since duct tape is sticky stuff.  It may take a few tries before you manage a clean cut.

2.  Fold one length of ribbon in half and place it on the end of the craft stick as shown.

3.  Cover the end of the ribbon with duct tape, pressing down firmly to make sure there are no air bubbles that might allow the ribbon to pull out.

4.  Turn the craft stick over and repeat with the other ribbon, folding the duct tape over to secure it.

If you want more ribbon on your wands, just repeat the instructions placing the ribbon over the duct tape and adding more tape on top to secure.

That’s it!  Super easy.  And the ribbon doesn’t come off.  I’ve pulled on these myself (hard) and they didn’t budge.  That’s not to say that a determined kid couldn’t do it, but they’d have to be pretty determined and it wouldn’t be accidental.

Now go have some dancing fun!

What other uses would you have for these?  Any improvements?  Please share!
