Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

Standard
Dishwasher, open and loaded with dishes

I’m so excited about this!   I hate regular dishwasher detergent.  The chemical smells drive me crazy and it is so expensive, not to mention it often comes in a plastic container.  Blah.  So I thought I’d try something different.   I made a batch of this recipe and it worked great!  The dishes were at least as clean as with regular detergent and there was no nasty chemical smell.  Yay!  (In fairness, I must confess that I rinse my dishes before I wash them so I don’t know how well this will clean unrinsed dishes.)

Here’s my version of the recipe for your convenience:

You’ll need:

Add the first 4 ingredients to a medium sized bowl and stir well.

Store in a 32 oz. container.  I used an old yogurt container.  Be sure to label it so no one eats it!

When you’re ready to wash, add 1 tablespoon to the open cup.  (Yes, I added mine to the closed cup the first time, but some of it stuck so I’m using the open one from now on!)

Fill the rinse compartment with vinegar.  That’s it!

Hooray for homemade!  If you try this, let me know how it goes.

Next week:  Homemade laundry detergent

    • I’m just starting to delve into this side of homemaking, so not many yet thought I’m posting some homemade laundry soap next week that I’m really excited about!

  1. I have a big bucket of borax (from trying to dry Lindsey’s bridal bouquet – didn’t work btw) just waiting for a good use so I’m going to try it. I’ll let you know how it is on UN-rinsed dishes!
